If you were to build a big, beautiful home with all the nicest things money could buy, you may choose to put a fence around your property. After all, you made a huge investment, and you don’t want just anyone coming in! There are bad people in this world who may come steal all your stuff, and maybe even destroy your property! So, you build a fence around your property, but you make sure to put a gate at the end of the driveway. This way, you can open it up and let the preacher in! But if a known thief or murderer comes to the gate, you would never open it for them. Your mind is quite like that expensive, fancy property. There are both good and bad thoughts, and you get to choose which ones get in.
It seems as though we can’t control many of the thoughts that enter our minds. But consider the gate to your property. You wouldn’t be able to control who came to the gate wanting in, but you could control whether you opened it for them. Similarly, you can choose to reject or accept any thoughts that come to the gate of your mind. Knowing which thoughts to accept can be tricky, but we have a God who knew we would struggle with such things, so He gave us a guide in His Word; A guide that tells us exactly which thoughts to focus on.
“Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” (Philippians 4:8)
Protect your mind… Protect your heart… Protect yourself… Think on these things.
